Jurassic Coast, Sidmouth

A Detour Worth Taking

It was a beautiful day in Sidmouth — the kind where the sun feels just right, and the sea breeze carries a little magic. I found myself walking near Jacob’s Ladder, wondering how I even got here.

The day had started in Essex. I hit the road early, like many of us do, hoping to beat the traffic and get ahead of the day. My first stop was Exeter, where I delivered a car, and from there I hopped on a bus to Sidmouth for my next job.

Everything was running smoothly, until it wasn’t. At the collection point, something unexpected came up with the vehicle. A delay. Nothing I could do but wait. A couple of hours suddenly opened up in front of me, unplanned and unscripted.

So I decided to take a walk.Ice cream in one hand, sunshine on my back, I wandered along the coast. To my right, the endless blue of the English Channel; ahead, the dramatic sweep of the Jurassic cliffs; and right in the middle of it all, Jacob’s Ladder — standing quietly against the beauty of it all.

Sometimes, the hold-ups become the highlights. That small twist in the day turned into a moment I’ll remember.

Just goes to show — there’s always a bright side, if you’re willing to look for it.
