Employee of the Month: Richard Pugh

Congratulations to Richard Pugh, our Head of Data, for being awarded Employee of the Month.

This month, our team voted for the colleague who best embodies our Make it Happen value — and Richard’s dedication made him a clear choice. He consistently goes the extra mile to deliver projects, share valuable insights and, of course, crunch the all-important data. Richard is always exploring new ways to support our drivers, boost internal efficiencies, and optimise job routes for both our customers and the wider network.

And now for a little fun… cha, cha, chaaaa — can you guess what his unusual hobby might be? 👀

What do you do for Engineius?

As Engineius' Head of Data, I help the business make data-driven decisions, automate processes, and lead our route planner project, which we're excited to roll out to all drivers very soon!

What motivates you to do well in your role?

I enjoy solving complex problems, as there's something deeply satisfying/comforting about using data and logic to uncover the truth of what's happening.

What playlist do you listen to in the car the most?

Despite working for a vehicle logistics company, I must confess I don't own a car and haven't learned to drive yet! When commuting by train, I'm usually listening to podcasts instead of music - typically science and tech shows, though I've recently been drawn into political debates (which I do not recommend as they are often as confusing and stressful).

What do you like most about working for Engineius?

I'm fortunate to work alongside incredibly talented and interesting colleagues. Also the data use cases here are particularly fascinating.

What’s your favourite way to unwind after a busy day?

I like a good book, particularly nerdy non-fiction that teaches me something new. On days when Im tired I do enjoy some trash TV!

Whats the most interesting thing you’ve seen or read this week?

My colleague gave a thought-provoking presentation on autonomous vehicles. According to his research, we're still about 50+ years away from achieving full driving autonomy which was good news for the business and our jobs but surprising given the current hype around the technology.

Describe one thing you've learnt in your role?

Nothing is ever as straightforward as it initially appears. What seems like a simple problem often spirals.

What’s a hobby or interest you have that might surprise your colleagues?

I have several unusual hobbies: wild camping, training MMA,  and recently, pushing myself even further outside my comfort zone I have taken up salsa lessons.
