Employee of the Month: Daniel Williams

Congratulations to Daniel Williams, our Full Stack Developer, for being awarded Employee of the Month.

He’s a Full-time Full Stack Developer, Part-Time language enthusiast! In just nine months, Daniel has proven that being new doesn't mean holding back. Whether he is debugging code or mastering his third (and fourth) languages, Daniel brings the same dedication and curiosity to everything he tackles!

What do you do for Engineius?

I am a Software Developer responsible for implementing new features and resolving bugs on the Engineius portal. I also search for and fix potential security vulnerabilities to help ensure the platform is secure and protected from cyber attacks.

What motivates you to do well in your role?

I enjoy the challenge of optimising many competing factors when creating software, balancing efficiency, maintainability, user value, and cost.

There is always more to learn, and I believe there is significant potential to build useful tools that have a positive impact on people and the world.

What playlist do you listen to in the car the most?

Rather than sticking to a single playlist, I prefer listening to full albums. I listen to a broad range of music across many genres and languages, and I'm especially drawn to music that blends different genres together.

Lately I have had Rosalía's new album LUX on repeat. It has a classical sound with elements of flamenco and pop, and she sings in 13 different languages on the album.

What do you like most about working for Engineius?

One of the things I like most at Engineius is the ability to quickly iterate on solutions. Our systems enable us to roll out new changes rapidly and monitor what works and what doesn't, making it much easier to refine solutions that are difficult to get right on the first try.

What’s your favourite way to unwind after a busy day?

I enjoy bouldering with my friends at the local climbing gym. It is a great way to socialise while staying active and requires a good mix of strength, stamina, flexibility, and even problem-solving.

My favourite style of climb is a slab, where balance and precision are most important.

What’s the most interesting thing you’ve read or seen this week?

This week I began reading Countdown to Zero Day by Kim Zetter, which covers a real case of state-sponsored cyberwarfare. It focuses on malware designed to disrupt Iran's uranium enrichment efforts.

The malware covertly took an estimated 1000 centrifuges out of operation before being discovered by cyber security researchers in 2010. It is fascinating but also frightening to read about how it worked and to see just how much damage malware can cause.

Describe one thing you've learnt in your role?

One important thing I have learnt in my role is the value of questioning assumptions. Challenging assumptions can reveal potential issues before they arise, but obsessing over every assumption slows progress.

Finding the right balance is key.

What’s a hobby or interest you have that might surprise your colleagues?

The hobby I have invested the most time into is my language learning. I speak Spanish and am learning Polish and Greek. I have even developed my own website to aid my language learning efforts.

I think it is really cool that language can reveal different perspectives, helping us understand the world and each other. Next time you spot me, greet me with an hola, cześć, or γεια σας!
